The areas around Melbourne offer many different natural environments. You might start at the spectacular coastline of the world famous Great Ocean road to the south west of Melbourne where you can see jaw dropping natural formations such as Loch Ard Gorge, ‘London Bridge’ and the incredible 12 Apostles. to the Dandenong Ranges on the Melbourne’s eastern border.
Further away there’s the Victorian high country. Here you can find beautiful rivers and, in winter, snow capped mountains such as Mt Baw Baw, Mt Hotham, Mt Buller, and Falls Creek. If you’re visiting from the northern hemisphere, keep in mind the cold part of winter doesn’t last long in Victoria! Therefore if you want to ski, you have to make the most of limited opportunities.
The Yarra Valley, to the east of Melbourne, offers rolling hills and some of Australia’s best wineries. Wilson’s Promontory, to Melbourne’s south, is the most southerly point of the Australian mainland. It’s famous for its rugged terrain and spectacular views.
